As Co-Owner and President of Special Ice, Emery has been instrumental in taking Special Ice to the level it currently sits at today. Starting out with one ice rink only four-years ago, he has amassed the largest ice rink portfolio in the Western U.S., which continues to grow every season. Emery began in the hockey world as a player as well as a coach, from the time he was young all the way through the professional level, and everything in between. He has been on the ice rink management side of things for the last 15 years, and has been involved with some of the highest profile ice rink events in the country. He attended Northern Michigan University and worked as a consultant in the industry for many years prior to launching Special Ice and continues to help establish industry standards with his emphasis of customer service and product quality.
Dave brings more than 30 years of successful rink operations and management experience, previously having spent the last eight years working on outdoor ice skating rinks venues from small community rinks to large National stadium events that gained national exposure. Prior to that he was the General Manager of the Oakland Ice Center for over nine years. He has also managed facilities in the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas of Virginia, and at the high-volume Galleria rink in Houston. With a personal tie to almost every aspect of the ice rink industry, Rich has been involved in the ice world for over 30 years. From his early days of playing ice hockey in Massachusetts, to building and overseeing some of the most exciting events in the country, he has seen it all. After spending time in the Navy, working in avionics and on flight operations of US aircraft carriers, Rich went on to attend and help create the ice hockey program at Old Dominion University, where he studied Business Information Systems.
Starting out as a skate guard and working his way up to General Manager, he never stopped pushing the envelope and resulted in him winning and holding onto the ice management contract for the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL, for over 15 years. Since then, he went on to develop some of the most attended events in the country including the NHL Winter Classic community rink in Pittsburgh, the Frozen Fenway project in Boston and the NHL Winterfest rink in Comerica Park in Detroit. In addition to those amazing events, he has continued to be a major lead on many complex ice repair, installations and paint jobs along the way.
After spending almost three decades creating his own path, Special Ice is excited to bring Rich onto the team where he will focus on servicing both year round and seasonal ice rinks as well as operational training and employee safety. Rich, his wife Shandra and their two children, Koen and Cecilia are all excited to watch Rich continue to do what he’s done for so many years, push the envelope in the ice rink industry.
